13 What to Do in Baltimore this Weekend

The past weekend saw the return of Light City Baltimore, a self-proclaimed “free festival of light, music & innovation,” as well as the beginning of Baltimore Food Truck Week. For the former, assorted light art installations are on show. Most of the pieces are interactive, like see-saws that light and emit musical notes when the ends rise and fall. This makes the event fun for adults and kids alike. The festival continues next weekend with a procession of musical performances and a parade.

Baltimore Food Truck Week is a delicious sampling of international flavor with some classic Baltimore twists. For example, food truck cuisines include Cajun, French, Mexican, and Ethiopian– but you’ll find crab or something else to sprinkle with Old Bay at practically every one of them! Don’t worry if you missed it; both events are annual and will be back next year!

04 The Luck O’ Fed Hill

This year, the annual celebration of the Irish culture and all of it’s importance fell on the third Saturday in March as people paraded in their greatest shades of green and sported shamrock-shaped accessories all around. Aside from the global hoorah of social drinking & pesky pinching, St. Patrick’s Day is “made up”, as some would say, but nonetheless a legitimate reason to go out on the town, try your luck, and drink for the fun of it.

Nightlife in Baltimore isn’t hard to find as the hometown of the Baltimore Orioles, Ravens, Baltimore city residents, and flood of thousands of students from the 12 neighboring schools take over the streets and alleyways all around.  Those who found themselves on S Charles St, reeking of Irish whisky & shots of cheap vodka, spent their Saturday night looking for “the ole’ pot of gold” behind the bar at the local pubs.

16 Fun in Baltimore: Steeplechase!

If you want a fun weekend in the Baltimore area, consider going to a steeplechase event! Steeplechase is an incredibly exciting form of horse racing, and there’s a surprisingly large community in Baltimore for it.

Take about a 20-minute drive north to Shawan Downs in Hunt Valley to watch the Greenspring Valley Point-to-Point races on March 31st, 2018. It’s early in the steeplechase season yet, so many local trainers are taking their prospective horses out for a test run. This guarantees a lot of horses running and a lot of interesting races! You’ll also see some well-known horses in the area race as a practice run for future, faster races.

The day starts off with the most adorable race ever: Shetland pony races for the kids! The ponies get really excited to race, and so do their young jockeys. Regardless of who wins, it’s a fun few races and the kids have a blast.

The Point-to-Point hosts many different levels of steeplechase races, from flat turf races to hurdles races, and even a fun sidesaddle chase! While there won’t be any betting at the Point-to-Point, you can bet that it’ll be a great weekend for racing. The forecast looks to be sunny in the mid 50s, which will be a welcome change from all the rain and snow we’ve had this winter.

Maryland is a central location for the steeplechase industry, and as such, there is a hub of great trainers and horses who all love the sport. The Baltimore area also hosts the Maryland Hunt Cup, one of the oldest steeplechase races in the United States, with a $100,000 purse. Consider going to a steeplechase event – who knows, maybe you’ll see a future Maryland Hunt Cup winner run!

03 Weekend Fun in Baltimore

Baltimore can be a great city for parents to bring their children for some weekend fun. Whether you are a local or visiting from out of the area, there is always something to do in the Charm City. On a beautiful Saturday you can take your children down to the Inner Harbor, where the top attraction is definitely the National Aquarium. Filled with all types of see creatures, this is a wonderful place for families to visit and bond over the sights of all the amazing animals. If you are looking for something a little more interactive, Downtown Baltimore also has a children’s museum by the name of Port Discovery. I remember visiting this museum as a kid and absolutely loved it! There are so many fun things to do in there, you will definitely have a memorable weekend if you visit.

15 – A Visionary Weekend

I have never liked museums.

They have always been a hot tourist destination, but what about something other than your typical history/ art museum that just seems to be full of room after room of pictures on the walls in the same gold, metal frame. Not that those classic museums cannot be entertaining, but what if you want to go somewhere other than a place middle school students may field trip to? What if you want to go to a fun museum.

The American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland offers the perfect spot for your next weekend hang out. Located on Key Highway in the shadows of Federal Hill, the AVAM offers a corky spot to spend time with their interactive exhibits, spend hours searching through the strange finds in the gift shop, and even hang out on the top floor which offers a restaurant and bar.

Afterwards you can take a stroll on Federal Hill for spectacular views of the Inner Harbor, and eat at some of Baltimore’s most famous restaurants a short walk away.

1 Fun in Columbia/Ellicott City

Hey! So over the summer, there are a lot of options for places to visit and travel to. Meaning, families with children and a two month break ahead of the might be struggling, and I do mean struggling, to find a nice place to vacation where everyone can have fun, not just the children. Well, I have a great suggestion for you where you can have the most fun in Baltimore! Why don’t you try visiting the Columbia/Ellicott City area of Maryland!

There are plenty of places in this area that you can visit and , on this blog post, I will try to introduce some of the stops that I think you and your family can enjoy. Lets get started!

  1. Downtown Ellicott City

So, for anyone who has ever been to this great place, this may seem like the obvious choice. However, weirdly there aren’t a lot of people who know about this place if they don’t live in Maryland. There are a lot of shops that families can stroll through and look around, plus food places so that they can eat in between shopping. Not only that but the place is a historical place.
